Some things to know when you arrive

A first night at a new club can feel a little daunting: you don't know anyone, and the people in charge might be mid-game. Don't worry, we're an approachable bunch. Talk to anyone and they'll point you in the right direction.

  • Practice and warm-up shuttles are near the net stands or on the floor.
  • Take a new shuttle from the tube only when it's needed for a game. Try the previous game's shuttle first, it helps us keep costs down.
Empty courts are for anyone sitting out
  • Use a free court to warm up or practise.
  • If you haven't spoken to someone in charge yet, check with them when games come off.
  • Play is pick-up, so groups tend to self-select. Stand up when a court frees and members will know you're ready to play.
On the court
  • We use USAB / BWF rules.
  • Games start quickly, with little extra warm-up once you've had your initial one.
  • To decide who serves, toss a shuttle in the air. Whichever side it points to when it lands serves first.
  • When it's busy, play one game to 21. When it's quiet, groups can play more, but please rotate if people are waiting.
  • Line calls: the side where the shuttle landed has the final say. Please accept it gracefully.
  • Scores: call the score loudly after every point. If there's a disagreement, agree a fair restart quickly and without fuss.
  • At the end of a game, shake hands across the net with all players.
Singles play
  • If courts are free, go ahead. If people are sitting out, check they don't want to play before you start a singles game.
Rules of the game

The basics in two minutes

We follow Badminton World Federation (BWF) rules. Here's what you need to know to jump into a game.

  1. A match is the best of three games, each to 21 points.
  2. Every rally scores a point, whoever served.
  3. At 20–20, you need a two-point lead to win. At 29–29, the next point wins.
  4. Serve from the right service court when the server's score is even (including 0), from the left when it's odd.
  5. The rally ends when the shuttle hits the floor, fails to cross the net, or lands outside the lines.

Singles vs doubles

Singles uses the narrow court (inside the side "tramlines") and the long back line. Doubles uses the full width, and the inner back line is the limit for serves only.
